Over the long weekend we were invited to meet up with my friend, Laurie, in Palm Springs, where the band she road manages was performing. We arrived on Saturday morning, met Laurie at the hotel, had breakfast at a place called Cheeky’s (where I had horchata, short rib hash, and a bacon flight), and set off to visit a land of…

Welcome to a place that’s not quite like Jurassic Park.
Did you know that just outside of Palm Springs, near a gas station and a Burger King on HWY 10, there’s a place called Cabazon Dinosaurs? You may remember it from such films as “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (and if you don’t remember it, well, may God have mercy on your soul. Oh, and speaking of souls, it should be noted that this place is run by Creationists. A sense of humor is probably required, especially when viewing a diorama depicting a sword-brandishing knight slaying a T-Rex. That’s all I’m going to say about that).

Dinos, man. Dinos.

Lead on.

My feet love dino tracks.

Admission is $7. We think it was worth it. I mean DINOS.

The coffee is a nice touch.

“Yeah, but, John, if The Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”

He’s not scared. Must be a Veggiesaurus. Kinda like a big cow.

This sort of looks like the one that ate Nedry.

Forget the Eames chairs, Mike. We need these. Totally matches our carpet and drapes scheme.

Ask him about dinosaurs.

Or else.

We stand by things and make variations of this face in every picture.

See?

And then, as Pee-wee did before us, we climb inside the T-Rex.

Twas a treacherous journey.

She looks cute so I’m keeping the butt shot.

Time to take 400 pictures.
Other photos from our first day in Palm Springs:

The view from our hotel room’s balcony. Palm Springs sure is pretty.

The giant “Forever Marilyn” sculpture near our hotel.

Really pretty neat.

Folks sitting around outside, enjoying the lovely evening weather.

The desert color palette is my favorite.

A tiled fountain.

Cacti. Another fave.

Children play in another fountain at dusk.
Up next? Birding in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve.

Love those dinosaurs, what a neat place! What a beautiful view from the hotel!
I know, right!?!? Luckily, my friend arranged the hotel for us. Nothing quite like a beautiful room at no cost, no?
Looks like a ton of fun. Makes me miss you all!
Miss you, too, Anners!
Very brave…..head in a mouth with lots of sharp teeth…..
I felt brave. And, if I’m honest, I did knock the side of my head on that tooth when I took my head out.
Research has shown that 67% of all brain trama occures when people take their heads out of big mouths with lot-o-teeth
What fun! What lovely weather. You obviously enjoyed yourselves.
LOVE the candid portraits. Really enjoyed it.
I saw that big dinosaur when driving but I failed to remember to go back to it. I was in Palms Springs last month. I went to Joshua Tree National Park afterwards. I must be too excited. That, or Palm Springs just has so many things to explore that I forgot to check off Cabazon Dinosaurs.
